Variety of Preaching by Jeffrey D. Arthurs Book Analysis by CH (CPT) Stephanie Handy The book that I read was entitled â€Å"Preaching with Variety† by Jeffrey D. Arthurs. It is a great resource and provided a wealth of information on various preaching styles and form. â€Å"The book describes the rhetorical dynamics of biblical genres and suggest how preachers can reproduce some of those dynamics in their sermon† (pg. 15). The content of the book consisted of illustrations, a forward, introduction, epilogue, notes, and a bibliography section. The author discussed various was to use the psalm, parable, proverb, epistle, narrative, and apocalyptic literature in preaching. Four of the topics discussed in the book focused on communication, the psalm, narrative, and parable. In chapter one, Arthurs pointed that God is the â€Å"great communicator† who communicated with variety. Variety is found throughout the word of God. Because God is a great communicator who used variety, preachers should preach with variety. Jesus used all kinds of form style, a nd genres of preaching. He knew how to get people attention. Preaching with variety helps the text to come alive. â€Å"Jesus used anecdotes, stories, paradoxes, contradictions, humor, irony, questions, and answers† (pg. 21), so we can too. Not only did Jesus used parables, objects, monologue and dialogue, but he used parables and symbols.
